Public Health Article

The article I chose discusses healthy-weight and obese children lifestyles. According to certain findings a change in diet and exercise can possibly have an impact on improving risk factors such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. There happens to be a study that is believed to be the first to compare the effects of changing diet and exercise in normal-weight and obese children. In the study children were to participate in a two-week, residential lifestyle program, where they were involved in daily exercising and a high-fiber, low-fat, plant-based diet. Most thought that only the obese children would be impacted by this experience, when really both groups of children enhanced their risk of getting cardiovascular and metabolic disease. Its unbelievable that 34% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 are overweight or obese. The article states how these unhealthy lifestyle factors begin in childhood and I agree. Most children today do not go out and play in their neighbors anymore, due to the fact that we have video games and rather just stay in and watch tv. When we do go out its to go to the movies, to a party or out to eat. I personally believe that all children and adults should take part in a healthy way of living. One key to a healthier and stronger life is taking care of yourself and watching what you feed your body. I like this article, because it relates to the discussions we have in class about public health and the roles of different public health professions. Also the controversy project we are working on, my partner and I are focusing on obesity in children and whether not the school should be involved or not.
